Challenge
To continue to maintain its social license to operate, South Wake County Landfill deployed odour abatement measures including installation of odour-dillution system around its premises and sealing waste with a posi-shell solution. However, odour emissions continued to leave the site due to constantly changing weather conditions.
In 2019, South Wake Landfill received approximately 300+ odour complaints a month on average with little-to-no understanding of their origin and validity. The growing number of complaints meant disruption to everyday operations and the facility had to invest in resources to manually investigate individual complaints.
Solution
In May 2020, South Wake Landfill contracted Envirosuite to deploy a comprehensive odour monitoring network including air quality sensors at strategic locations around the facility to visualise multiple environmental parameters including H2S.
Additionally, the landfill was armed with Envirosuite’s reverse modelling technology to identify the source of incoming odour complaints. With the digital modelling solution, South Wake centralised its complaints management process and minimise the use of manual investigation for each incoming odour concern.
The landfill is also empowered with Envirosuite’s hyperlocal weather forecasting capabilities to schedule high-emissions, odour generating activities at low-risk times.
Result
Five months since the adoption of Envirosuite solution, South Wake experienced its valid odour complaints drop to 100 a month from 800 a few months ago. The landfill was able to demonstrate to concerned county residents that its operations are not responsible for a large amount of odour nuisance complaints previously directed at the facility.
Moreover, South Wake is now optimising its resources for odour mitigation and focus odour incident investigation on valid complaints.
Fast forward to May 2022, odour complaints further dropped to 65 a month as the landfill continues to deploy precise odour mitigation strategies using real-time insights from Envirosuite solution and effectively schedule its operations around high-risk periods.
