How Newmont Takes Proactive Approach to Noise Monitoring and Maintaining Good Relations

Redeveloping Hollinger Mine at Porcupine Gold Mines has raised concerns about environmental impacts in the community. Although mines have been operating nearby for over 100 years, a greater emphasis must be placed on mitigating impacts on all stakeholders.

The Hollinger Mine expansion at Porcupine Gold Mines has prompted Newmont to adopt a comprehensive and proactive approach to environmental management, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding community of Timmins. Recognizing the significance of the expansion and the associated concerns regarding noise, dust, and vibration, Newmont collaborated with local stakeholders to develop the Best Management Plan (BMP) and the Site Plan Control Agreement. These documents comprehensively address mining activities, site reclamation, and contingency planning, with a strong emphasis on community concerns and environmental stewardship.

To enhance monitoring capabilities, Newmont implemented Envirosuite's advanced real-time monitoring system, which allows for continuous oversight of environmental parameters. This integrated solution not only facilitates immediate data access to both mine personnel and the public but also fosters transparency and trust within the community. By actively communicating findings and responding to concerns, Newmont reinforces its reputation as a responsible corporate citizen committed to minimising impacts on its neighbours.
