Despite originally being designed to accommodate 55 million passengers annually, Heathrow now serves up to 78 million passengers per year. With only two runways operating at over 98% capacity, the airport faces significant challenges in managing flight delays and capacity issues. Airspace trials conducted in 2014 changed flight patterns and resulted in increased noise complaints from surrounding communities, damaging public trust and highlighting the need for greater community engagement.
Heathrow committed to being a quieter airport through its Noise Action Plan, recognising that while growth was necessary, it would impact surrounding communities. The airport needed a solution that would provide transparent, fact-based data to rebuild public trust. This approach required addressing both acoustic factors (primarily noise) and non-acoustic factors like air quality, balancing modernisation needs with community relations.
Envirosuite developed a comprehensive solution that enhances Heathrow's existing flight tracking and information management systems, ANOMS and WebTrak. The upgraded system enables real-time data sharing with communities in an easy-to-understand format, providing location-based information to help residents better understand flight patterns over their specific areas. It also includes a public "league table" showcasing airline environmental performance, encouraging improvements across the board. Additionally, web applications address common community questions about flight heights, schedules, and frequency, fostering greater transparency and engagement.
See how Heathrow became a leader in noise management and achieved:
Greater transparency, improving community trust and relations
Set realistic community expectations by aligning perceptions with fact-based data
Improved environmental performance across airlines through public ranking and competition
Enhanced communication about planned growth initiatives
Reduced environmental constraints to future development through stronger regional support
Established foundation for ongoing improvements including expanded noise monitoring and reporting systems
